Kaleta Doolin, Park House 2023

Kaleta Doolin, Park House 2023

About the Exhibition
Over the course of her career, Dallas-based artist Kaleta Doolin has developed an enigmatic style to facilitate her intersectional social critique. Casting traditionally domestic items in steel and iron, her sculptural work problematizes cultural equations of femininity with delicacy. Rusting doilies and patinaed florals carry on the legacies of their referents, putting Doolin in dialogue with artists like Betye Saar, Méret Oppenheim and Louise Bourgeois. At Park House, Steel Lace speaks to the artist’s new and existing accomplishments in sculpture, textiles, installation and conceptual art. Her inventive use of textiles — either as stencils, molds or mixed with metals — harnesses the emotional power of objects and symbols, denaturing their biases and grounding them in a contemporary feminist sensibility. Doolin draws on the accomplishments of those before her, encouraging future generations to eschew the oppressive constraints of domesticity as it was, and still is, exercised on women.

About the Artist
Kaleta Doolin (b. 1950) lives and works in Dallas, TX. Doolin is a feminist artist known for her interdisciplinary and critical application of industrial materials and found objects. In the foreword to Doolin’s forthcoming book, Jessica Morgan, director of the Dia Art Foundation, writes, “Delighting in the act of transformation, in Doolin’s hands hard becomes pliable; solid becomes porous; and delicate becomes durable.” Her work can be found in collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England. In addition to her ongoing work as an artist, Doolin was co-director of the 5501 Columbia Art Center from 1992 to 2001 and was the co-founder of the Texas African American Photography Archives.

California Dreaming

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION & ARTISTS
We have partnered with the esteemed global auction house, Sotheby’s, to present an exhibition of works created in the studios of Mixografia, a Los Angeles based print publisher. The selection comprises editions produced in the past 20 years by well-known pioneering artists from the Pop-Art and Conceptual art movements such as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha and Alex Israel, amongst others; each work representing the artist’s recognizable visual language within the context of Mixografia’s unique three-dimensional print making processes. For each of the artists in the show, print making is an integral part of their artistic output, an essential way to explore alternate media and push the boundaries of artistic expression.

For decades, Mixografia has distinguished itself as the publisher of complex works redefining the boundaries of the printmaking medium. Originally established in 1968 as Taller de Gráphica in Mexico City by Luis Remba, and based in California since the 1980s. The publisher attracts artists from all over the world, setting new standards in graphic arts, owing to their liberation from the strictly two-dimensional process of works on paper. Mixografia has exhibited in museum shows internationally and their publications hold prominent positions in the printmaking careers of important contemporary artists such as Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari and Tom Wesselmann. Sotheby’s is proud to partner with Mixografia, offering access to its prints directly from the publisher.

This diverse show includes works by six acclaimed artists:
 - John Baldessari (1931-2020)
- Dario Escobar (B. 1971)
 - Alex Israel (B. 1982)
 - Ed Ruscha (b. 1937)
 - Donald Sultan (B. 1971)
 - Tom Wesselman (1931-2004)

PLEASE SIGN IN ALL GUESTS by Nick Mele

ABOUT THE ARTIST...
Referred to as "a modern day Slim Aarons" by Town & Country and Veranda Magazine, Mele has had his photographs featured in a myriad of online and print publications including The New York Times, The Financial Times, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Vogue and Vanity Fair. His commercial clients include brands such as Ralph Lauren, Sam Edelman, J.McLaughlin and Lilly Pulitzer, as well as several high end hotels and interior designers. Mele's first book, A Newport Summer, was published in May 2022 by Vendome Press. His second book, Palm Beach Living, is due out in February 2023.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION...
Nick Mele presents his first collection of limited edition fine art prints. The photo series, titled PLEASE SIGN IN ALL GUESTS, is a flamboyant ode to classic Palm Beach. Primarily a lifestyle, fashion and interior design photographer, Mele is best known for his whimsical take on luxury and elegance. This new series of photographs marks a shift to a new style of decadent storytelling. Mele's irreverent take on timeless, all-American glamour is immediately recognizable, but in this series, he moves past the magazine pages, spinning tales of surreal characters in dreamlike domestic spaces. Documenting a lifestyle at once familiar yet fantastic, Mele's imagery feels like a fanciful peek into the rarefied spaces of Palm Beach society. As viewers, we are offered a glimpse into improbably beautiful spaces that are normally inaccessible to the public eye.

In this series of large-scale archival photographs, some of Palm Beach's most storied locales are brought to life through Mele's wit and theatricality. Mele's dramatic use of bold color and composition highlight the Colony Hotel's glamorous and luxurious interiors, while Duck's Nest, the historic home of founding Palm Beach homesteaders, becomes the elegant backdrop for serene scenes of domestic life. Through these backdrops and more, we are momentarily free to daydream of another world, in cotton-candy pinks and sky blues, that exists just behind the wrought iron gates.

“EVE OF DESTRUCTION” BY JEN RAY

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Jen Ray creates paintings, performances, and sound works celebrating female self-determination. Drawing inspiration and symbolism from a wide range of socio-political and cultural references, Jen Ray challenges static or reverential perceptions of feminism and encourages ongoing discussions about gender, intersectionality, and identity. The presentation Eve of Destruction features works of art that hint at the real perils women face every day... in many of the works, female figures are glamorously dressed in battle gear, and a flower encrusted porcelain axe hangs on the wall within easy reach of the warriors. Although the works are presented as fantasy, they symbolize real-world events and pressures. The exhibition continues the artist's interest and exploration of the cycles of destruction and re-invention on both a grand scale and on the personal side.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jen Ray (b. 1970, American) has spent the last several years living and working in Berlin, where she is represented by Wentrup gallery. Rayʼs work has been exhibited widely throughout Germany, including shows at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Kunstverein Kassel, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. Jen Rays drawings are militantly detailed filigrees of judicious line and color; the artist's hand enunciates sparring Amazonian women, who inhabit decaying, semi-surrealist and strangely beautiful wastelands. In addition to her works on paper, Ray orchestrates lavish and provocative performances in which the female protagonists of her drawings come to life.

ARTIST

Hexton Gallery: Right Place by Marcos Acosta

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Marcos Acosta has been exploring the traditional genre of landscape painting for 20 years. As a native of Córdoba, Argentina, he absorbs and digests the visual aspects of his territory with an exquisite level of detail, questioning the relationship between men and nature through his irreverent geometries. This recent collection of paintings follows on the heals of his last institutional exhibition Outside the Wind, Inside The World  and addresses the universal connection that lies beneath everything that is.

Acosta explores the notion that, at a subatomic level, humans are made of the same elements as everything around us. As such, the artist finds himself in the natural elements that he portrays and offers us an opportunity to do the same. These works propose an integration with nature, not a separation from it, and in so doing erases the tension between culture and nature. The places he depicts in his works are outside of any specific physical space and instead formed by an echo or a dream, further uniting us and the landscape. The Right Place is no place and every place, encompassing a common essence that is, at its core, simply light.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Cordóba, Argentina in 1980, Marcos developed his artistic activity in multiple fields, mainly painting, drawing, engraving and sculpture. He began his studies at the age of 10 and attended different private workshops, alternating with stages of self-taught production until the age of 16. In 1998, he began his studies at the Faculty of Arts of the National University of Cordóba, Argentina, from which he graduated with a BA in Painting. Between 1998 and 2000, he attended the workshop of master artist Carlos Peiteado, with whom he further perfected his drawing, painting and composition. Since 2001, Acosta has had over 35 solo exhibitions, more than 115 collective exhibitions and has received several awards and honors in Argentina. Acosta’s work is represented in many private collections and public art institutions around the world.

Hexton Gallery: From Behind the Glass by American Michael De Feo

Exhibition Overview

ABOUT THE ARTIST
New York City based artist, Michael De Feo has been painting flowers around the world since the early 1990’s. Rooted at the forefront of the street art movement in New York, he earned the moniker “The Flower Guy”. Continuously exploring the alluring beauty of the natural world, Michael created a series of flower-inspired paintings symbolizing beauty, ephemerality, ritualistic expression, and the cycle of life. Beginning in 2015, he used a master key to access the ad spaces in city bus-stops, inserting his paintings in place of the original branded campaigns, combining the intimacy of these bouquets with an outdoor projection. As the removed advertisements piled up in his studio, he began painting over them, and then reinstalled them back into the vitrines on the streets. This body of work merges fashion takeovers with guerrilla art by both subverting and celebrating the underlying images. With the excitement that came out of combining the fashion world with floral treatments, an ongoing series of magazine page interventions came to life. This exhibition encompasses works from these different moments in his career, visualizing his trajectory. His studio work incorporates a wide range of influences, from Dutch 17th century still life painting to fashion magazines and fashion advertising campaigns. He often adds his floral treatments and cascades of multicolored petals to existing printed images from the fashion world and art history/traditional art, which both subverts and celebrates the underlying image. Michael was asked to paint his signature flowers on the Neiman Marcus covers. In an interesting connection to Dallas, Michael did a collaboration with the Neiman Marcus catalog “The Book” back in 2016. These covers were part of a series of NM catalogs that year that won a Clio Award.

Night Gallery's "Double Portrait" exhibition by Andy Woll

Rotating Exhibitions

Exhibition Overview - Night Gallery Present's "Double Portraitby Andy Woll
May 21 – October 1, 2021

Night Gallery is pleased to present "Double Portrait", an exhibition of new paintings by Andy Woll at Park House in Dallas, Texas.

Andy Woll is a Los-Angeles based artist known for spirited, gestural paintings featuring thick applications of oil paint. Across his body of work he has revisited straightforward subjects – including Los Angeles’ Mt. Wilson, horses, and standing chairs – which through his repeated depictions become contexts for evolving explorations of color and form. Made alongside works of pure abstraction, Woll’s paintings push at the limit of representation, masterfully reigning his seemingly spontaneous brushwork into figuration.

Recent iterations of Woll’s series have found the artist incorporating passages from historic works of art hidden within his paintings of mountains and horses, layering both illusions and allusions within deceptively simple compositions. With playful elegance, these works collapse the lineage of oil painting within singular images, hearkening back to the Old Masters while employing formal strategies out of Modernism. In conversation with the heavy viscosity of Woll’s brushstrokes, which add inches of depth to the painting’s surface, the works become testaments to the history of oil paint not only as a tool of representation but also as a material itself. In his ongoing series we can find the artist delighting in the medium of paint, uncovering new and revelatory possibilities through the act of repetition.

About the Artist...
Andy Woll lives and works in Los Angeles. He has exhibited work at Denny Dimin Gallery, New York, NY; Wilding Cran Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Blum and Poe, Los Angeles, CA; Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York, NY and others. His work has been featured in Cultured Magazine, Artnet, Two Coats of Paint among others. He is represented by Night Gallery.

Deep in the Art of Texas

Rotating Exhibitions

Exhibition Overview - Deep in the Art of Texas
We were delighted to have Donald Robertson’s tongue-in-cheek, humorous art grace the walls and halls of Park House for his first show in Dallas. Our collaboration with the noted pop artist, prolific Instagram star and illustrator, enlivened the walls as you entered Park House. Donald recently moved his family to Highland Park from Southern California. Within a few short months, he has entrenched himself in the culture and subtleties of Texas and Dallas.

Donald’s show featured various elements including his works on canvas, illustrations directly on the walls and large-scale sculptures. And for this show only, we created an “Instagram Photo” opportunity! Be sure to follow Donald on Instagram at @drawbertson. PH hosted a programming event were Donald chatted with PH co-founder, Deborah Scott, about his inspirations behind the Park House show and the wide breadth of art works he creates out of anything from an old basketball, vintage canvases and oil drums. Donald’s works were also available for purchase right off the walls. A percentage of the sale of each piece benefited our soon to be launched Park House Foundation, PHoundation. More information to follow on this exciting charity endeavor.

Now a word from the Artist...Donald's Vision:
“Happy April Fools!” The perfect day to open a show of my work. I pride myself on being foolish. I love making ridiculous things. “Funny Art” - not just because people who know better told me not to. Oh no. I explained it this way...I like my work to be “tongue in chic”. That explains what I do perfectly. Stupid I know. Google if you will my first solo show I did in Paris at Colette. It was during French Fashion week. I had been invited by Madam Colette herself to show my Portraits I make out of Walnuts. The show was called #fashionisnuts! It was so stupid and so genius at the same time. I’ll never forget Planters peanuts executives tried to contact me after because they said it’s hard to get high end fashion press for nuts! I proved them wrong.

People in California said I was crazy for moving to Texas. That was in December 2020. I got here in January 2021 and my wife, Kim, and I immediately landed on a bar sofa in Park House. We had the best night. Deborah asked me to lunch the next day. She had me sign one of the last copies of my (sold out) book. Then, we came up with the idea to let me art bomb the joint. The front part!!! I am thrilled to have the blank walls to share all my latest work. Inspired by my very long drive to Texas. I drove a dog and my middle son, Ted. Kim and the other two flew. It was a great trip and sparked something in me very deeply. Now the broker that sold me our house in Highland Park says all his appointments these days are showing people from California houses for sale. Ha! Who is the genius now!!!

I’m sorry my Assouline coffee table book sold out. I would love to have it at Park House. I got a coffee table book of all my work because I was painting my name on their other covers and they asked me to stop. So, I got my own book. See how smart it is to do dumb things. Did I mention it sold out? Texas is a world into itself. Diana Vreeland said 'the eye has to travel.'  She was right. I have a lobby stuffed with inspired art to prove it."

About the Artist...
Canadian-born Robertson attended the Ontario College of Art and Design. He provided creative direction for the launch of MAC Cosmetics and later moved to New York City to work for Condé Nast, where he launched Marie Claire magazine.  In 2007, Donald started as a creative director at Esteé Lauder Companies on brands such as Smashbox, Bobbi Brown, and Bergdorf Goodman, including launching Flirt Cosmetics, Amber Rose.

FALL/WINTER ART ROTATION

Exhibition Overview
Park House's Fall/Winter 2020 exhibition showcased works from its members’ collections, highlighting the work of six women artists. Concepts of deconstruction were explored for this exhibition. By taking a deconstructive approach, in which not one single meaning can be found in a work, but rather many and often conflicting, we were able to discover and better understand underlying and perhaps unspoken thematics and frameworks. We opened the work for interpretation by observation. In each of these works the viewer was only privy to a moment in time, to the equivalent of a film still in a feature film. An instance with endless possibilities, with uncertain beginnings and endings. The placement of the works in the exhibition aimed to provoke a desire to investigate what is not apparent at first glance and produce — rather than presume — meaning to the works and also to place them in conversation with one another. Members were invited to spend time with each piece, to look closely and often.

The exhibition was curated by Dallas Contemporary’s Deputy Director, Carolina Alvarez-Mathies.

Gilbert & George

Art for All

Gilbert & George are a fascinating collaborative duo based in East London. With the creed "Art for All," they have engaged and stunned the world with their peculiar performance pieces and vibrant photo-collage work.

The pair met while studying at St. Martin's School of Art, and have lived together as "living sculptures" ever since. Their performance art piece, The Singing Sculpture, put them on the map in 1969. Since then, the two have functioned as one artist, and are known for large-scale photography, often working in bold colors and black grids.

Rarely seen apart, and almost always in matching suits, Gilbert & George's relevancy extends beyond the art world. They have inspired comic book series and their work has been a favorite collectable of David Bowie.  In 2008, they were listed among the best dressed men over 50 in The Guardian. This year, they released a collaboration with the brand, Supreme

Their work is featured in The Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Gallery, London, and all around the world.

All Gilbert & George artwork is available for purchase from Lehmann Maupin Gallery.

Charlie Billingham

A Well Deserved Break

Park House opened it's doors and showcased British painter, Charlie Billingham, and his unique art work that was featured in our rotating art gallery from December 2018 through October 2019.

Charlie Billingham takes imagery from Regency-era satirical prints and drawings, cropping and distorting sections to create new compositions, devoid of the intended political and social meanings of the original illustrations. A rainbow of powdered wigs, plumed bonnets, sagging britches, and full-figured bottoms dance across his paintings. The canvases, which are sometimes hinged together to make folding screens, are often hung on block printed wall paintings and alongside colorful painted plant pots and houseplants, to create decorative, domestic interiors. Charlie Billingham (b. 1984, London) studied Fine Art and History of Art in Edinburgh (2008) and then Fine Art at the Royal Academy Schools in London (2013).
